There were various types of tomb in the Phoenician and Punic world. The well tombs consisted o
f large chambers excavated underground and connected with the surface by a well, with steps cut into its sides to facilitate access. The dromic tombs, always cut out of rock, were made up of a single chamber to which access was provided by a passage with
a flight of steps (dromos). Pit tombs were dug out of the earth without any particular constructions; in some cases the grave had a border and was covered by slabs of stone. In the Hellenistic period (third-second century bC), funeral monuments were ere
cted in North Africa that mixed local elements with Punic, Greek, and Egyptian ones. There were two different types: circular \b \cf1 \ATXht13 mausoleums\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 or mounds and towers.\par
